Honestly - WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH MY FELLOW REPUBLICANS!?
We have a corrupt governor in Ernie Fletcher in Kentucky who was sure to lose the general election. In comes Ann Northup, who would have been a suberp governor, to save the day in the GOP primary and save the governorship for the party. Is she greeted as the white knight that she is? NO! The idiots renominate Ernie Fletcher who then goes on to be destroyed in the general election as predicted. Great job Kentucky GOP. Way to blow it.
Out in California, despite just about every serious Republican distancing himself from John Doolittle comes word that he still might win his primary against a great candidate in Iraqi War veteran Eric Egland handily...and go on to lose to the Democrat in this staunchly conservative district by about 20 points.
Ted Stevens and Don Young are quickly headed for the same fate if Alaskans don't act. At least Alaska Republicans have a recent history of knowing when to dump their losers - as evidenced by their turning to Sarah Palin when it was apparent that Gov. Frank Murkowski was widely unpopular. In fact, they didn't just drop him to runner-up, Murkowski came in THIRD in that primary and Sarah Palin went on to win the Governor's Mansion handily.
Where are my thank you cards - I need to send one to Rick Renzi for graciously bowing out and all of the Alaska Republican primary voters for doing the right thing.
Well, now it looks like the another GOP primary electorate just royally screwed up again by nominating admitted liar and prolific tax hiker Bob Latta over Club for Growth-endorsed conservative superstar Steve Bruehrer.
From the Toledo Blade:
"The Ohio Elections Commission unanimously slapped
congressional candidate Bob Latta with a reprimand after ruling today
that his congressional campaign knowingly or recklessly lied about
opponent Steve Buehrer’s positions in political flyers.
"Even the
Latta campaign’s attorney, Scott Pullins, admitted statements that Mr.
Buehrer 'opposed' prayer in public schools and 'didn’t want' the Ten
Commandments posted were 'misleading,' a 'cheap shot,' and a 'political low blow.'
"But he argued unsuccessfully that the false statements did not rise to the level of a violation of Ohio election law."

"He also noted that, while both were serving in
the Ohio House, state Representative Latta (R., Bowling Green) had an
office adjacent to his where Mr. Buehrer has had the Ten Commandments
posted since 2003.
“Mr. Latta was in and out of my office numerous
times and the document was always posted where he or anyone else could
see it,’’ he said. He added he supports voluntary prayer in schools and
the voluntary posting of the Ten Commandments in government buildings,
including schools."

Scott Pullins, attorney for the Latta campaign, stopped just short of issuing an apology.
“'It’s
not reckless,’ he told the commission. 'Was it misleading? Yes. Was it
a cheap shot? Yes. Was it a political low-blow? Yes. Did I want that
statement to go out? No. Does the Latta campaign regret making that
statement. Yes. But that’s not the standard this commission has to
comply.’’
Some over at RedState.com - most notably the site's president and CEO Erik Erickson - are arguing that Latta is better than the Democrat. I'm not so sure. In the short run, probably. In the long run, however, I think that it's best that the GOP start policing itself and purifying itself of the Ted Stevenses, Don Youngs, Ernie Fletchers, Frank Murkowskis, Rick Renzis, John Doolittles....and Bob Lattas.
Given Erickson's sympathies for that other prolific tax hiker - Mike Huckabee the Christian socialist - I suppose that this shouldn't be all that surprising.
